THEN
- Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of King
Ravana’s vimanas, he felt he was being followed by Brahmahathya Dosham (a
malevolent black shadow) as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. When
the Vimana was passing over Munneshwaram, he felt the vimana vibrating, and
realised the “Brahmahathya Dosham” was following him at this particular point.
So
he ascended from vimana and prayed to Lord Shiva to get rid of this dosham.
Rama was adviced to and has installed four lingams at Munneshwaram, Manavari,
Trinco and Mannar.
NOW
- It is believed that Munneshwaram predates the Ramayana and a temple dedicated
to Lord Shiva is located here. Munneshwaram means the first temple for Shiva
(Munnu + Easwaran). A Shiva Lingam was already here when Rama visited the place.
